George Martin was an English record producer, arranger, composer, conductor, and musician who is best known for his work with The Beatles in the 1960s. He was often called the Fifth Beatle because of his extensive involvement in each of their original albums. He also worked with many other artists, such as Cilla Black, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Elton John, Jeff Beck, America, and Paul McCartney.

Martin was born on January 3, 1926, in London, England. He grew up in a working-class family and developed an interest in music at a young age. He learned to play the piano and joined the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and worked as a music editor for the BBC.

In 1955, he joined EMI Records as an assistant to Oscar Preuss, the head of Parlophone, a small label that specialized in comedy and novelty records. He soon became the head of Parlophone and signed acts such as Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, and Rolf Harris. He also produced classical and jazz records and experimented with new recording techniques.

In 1962, he met Brian Epstein, the manager of a young band from Liverpool called The Beatles. He was impressed by their charisma and songwriting skills and agreed to sign them to Parlophone. He also suggested that they replace their drummer Pete Best with Ringo Starr. He then began a fruitful collaboration with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Starr that lasted until their break-up in 1970.

Martin played a crucial role in shaping The Beatles’ sound and style. He arranged their songs, added orchestral and instrumental parts, edited and mixed their recordings, and encouraged them to explore new genres and techniques. He also composed scores for their films A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Yellow Submarine, and Magical Mystery Tour. Some of his most notable contributions include the piano solo on In My Life, the string quartet on Yesterday, the harpsichord on Fixing a Hole, the tape loops on Tomorrow Never Knows, and the orchestral crescendo on A Day in the Life

After The Beatles split up, Martin continued to produce records for many artists. He also founded his own company, AIR Studios, which had branches in London and Montserrat. He also composed music for films such as Live and Let Die, Pulp, The Mission, and The Princess Bride. He also collaborated with Paul McCartney on several projects, such as Tug of War, Pipes of Peace, Flaming Pie, and Chaos and Creation in the Backyard.

Martin received many honours and awards for his achievements. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1988 and a Knight Bachelor in 1996. He won six Grammy Awards, an Academy Award nomination, a BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. He also published two autobiographies: All You Need Is Ears (1979) and Playback (1995).

Martin died in his sleep at his home in Wiltshire on March 8, 2016, at the age of 90. He is survived by his four children from his first marriage to Sheena Chisholm and his second wife Judy Lockhart-Smith. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and respected figures in the history of popular music.
