Steve Ellis is an English singer who rose to fame in the late 1960s as the lead vocalist of the band Love Affair, which had a string of hit singles, including Everlasting Love, A Day Without Love, Rainbow Valley, and Bringing On Back the Good Times. He is regarded as one of the finest blue-eyed soul singers of his generation.
Ellis was born on April 7, 1950, in Edgware, Middlesex. He started singing at a young age and joined his first band, The Soul Survivors, when he was 15. He was spotted by a talent scout and signed to CBS Records in 1967. He then formed Love Affair with four other musicians and recorded their debut single, She Smiled Sweetly, which was produced by Robert Stigwood.
However, their breakthrough came with their second single, Everlasting Love, which was a cover of a song by Robert Knight. The song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in January 1968 and sold over one million copies worldwide. It was followed by three more top ten hits, all featuring Ellis’s powerful and soulful voice.
Ellis left Love Affair in 1969 to pursue a solo career, but he faced some difficulties due to contractual issues and changing musical trends. He released several singles and albums in the 1970s and 1980s, but none of them matched his earlier success. He also collaborated with other artists, such as Roger Daltrey, Paul Weller, and Ian Dury.
In the 1990s, Ellis reformed Love Affair with a new line-up and toured extensively across Europe. He also recorded new material with his own band, The Steve Ellis Band. In 2007, he released an album called Ten Commitments, which featured original songs and covers of his favourite soul classics. In 2018, he released another album called Boom! Bang! Twang!, which was co-produced by Paul Weller and featured guest appearances by Andy Crofts and Ben Gardiner of The Moons.
He is widely respected by his peers and fans for his distinctive voice and his passion for music.
