Fats Domino was a legendary American musician who helped shape the sound and style of rock and roll. He was born as Antoine Dominique Domino Jr. on February 26, 1928, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a French Creole family. He learned to play the piano from his brother-in-law, a jazz guitarist, and started performing in local clubs and bars when he was a teenager. In 1949, he signed a contract with Imperial Records and released his first single, “The Fat Man”, which is considered by some to be the first rock and roll record. It sold over a million copies and launched Domino’s career as a national star. He collaborated with producer and songwriter Dave Bartholomew, who co-wrote many of his hits, such as “Ain’t That a Shame”, “Blueberry Hill”, “I’m Walkin’”, and “Whole Lotta Loving”.

Domino’s music was characterized by his distinctive rolling piano style, his warm and expressive voice, and his catchy melodies and lyrics. He blended elements of rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie, and New Orleans jazz to create a unique sound that appealed to both black and white audiences. He was one of the most popular and influential artists of the early rock era, selling more than 65 million records and earning 35 Top 40 hits.

He also inspired many other musicians, such as Elvis Presley, who called him “the real king of rock ‘n’ roll”, and the Beatles, who covered his songs and met him in 1964. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and received several other honours and awards, such as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987 and the National Medal of Arts in 1998.

Domino was married to Rosemary Hall for 60 years, until her death in 2008. They had eight children, who also became musicians. He lived in the same house in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans for most of his life, and was known for his generosity and humility. He survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but lost most of his possessions and memorabilia. He died on October 24, 2017, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of music and joy.
