Scotty Moore was an American guitarist who played a key role in the birth of rock and roll. He was born on December 27, 1931, in Gadsden, Tennessee, and learned to play the guitar from his family and friends. He joined the US Navy when he was underage and served in China and Korea from 1948 to 1952.
He became famous as the guitarist of Elvis Presley’s backing band, The Blue Moon Boys, which he formed with bassist Bill Black in 1954. He recorded many classic hits with Elvis, such as “That’s All Right”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Hound Dog”, and “Jailhouse Rock”. He also appeared with Elvis on TV shows and movies, such as Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, and GI Blues. He was known for his distinctive and influential guitar style, which combined elements of blues, country, and jazz. He inspired many other guitarists, such as Keith Richards, George Harrison, and Eric Clapton.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2007, and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2015. He died on June 28, 2016, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of music and innovation.
