Scotty Moore was one of the most influential guitarists in the history of rock and roll. He was the lead guitarist for Elvis Presley’s backing band, The Blue Moon Boys, and played on many of Elvis’s classic recordings, such as That’s All Right, Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, and Jailhouse Rock. He also helped shape the sound of rockabilly, a fusion of country, blues, and rhythm and blues that became popular in the 1950s.

Moore was born on December 27, 1931, near Gadsden, Tennessee. He learned to play the guitar at age eight from his family and friends1. He was a fan of jazz and country music and was influenced by guitarists like Chet Atkins and Les Paul. He served in the Navy during World War II and then moved to Memphis, where he worked at a dry cleaning plant and played music in his spare time.

In 1954, Moore was contacted by Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, who asked him to audition a young singer named Elvis Presley. Moore was impressed by Presley’s charisma and voice and agreed to form a band with him and bassist Bill Black. They recorded their first song, That’s All Right, at Sun Studio on July 5, 1954, which became a regional hit and launched Presley’s career.

Moore played with Presley for the next 14 years, both in the studio and on tour. He developed a distinctive style of guitar playing that combined rhythm and lead parts, using techniques like fingerpicking, slides, bends, vibrato, and echo effects. He also contributed to the arrangements and production of many of Presley’s songs. He was regarded as one of Presley’s closest friends and confidants.

Moore left Presley’s band in 1968 after a dispute over money and royalties. He continued to work as a session musician, producer, and songwriter for other artists, such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Ringo Starr, Dolly Parton, and Keith Richards. He also released several solo albums and collaborated with other guitar legends like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Ron Wood.

Moore died on June 28, 2016, at the age of 84 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 as a sideman and into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 201. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time and a pioneer of rock and roll music.
