Chris de Burgh is a British-Irish singer-songwriter and musician who is best known for his 1986 hit song “The Lady in Red”. He was born in Argentina in 1948 to a British diplomat father and a French Creole mother. He grew up in various countries, including Malta, Nigeria, and Congo, before settling in Ireland. He studied at Trinity College Dublin and signed his first record deal with A&M Records in 1974.
He started his musical career as an art rock performer, but later shifted to more pop-oriented material. He has released over 20 albums and sold more than 45 million records worldwide. He has had several top 40 hits in the UK and two in the US, as well as chart success in many other countries, especially Norway and Brazil. Some of his most popular songs include “Don’t Pay the Ferryman”, “High on Emotion”, “Missing You”, and “A Spaceman Came Travelling”. He has also written songs for films, such as Working Girl, American Psycho, and Paper Towns.
He has been married to Diane Davison since 1977 and they have three children, one of whom is former Miss World Rosanna Davison. He lives in a castle in County Wexford, Ireland, which he bought and restored in the 1990s. He is also a humanitarian and environmental activist, who has supported causes such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and the Chernobyl Children’s Project. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2007 for his services to music and charity.
