Roxette was a Swedish pop rock duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson (vocals) and Per Gessle (vocals and guitar). The duo was formed in 1986 and became an international act in the late 1980s, when they released their breakthrough second album Look Sharp! Their third album Joyride, released in 1991, became as successful as its predecessor.
Roxette’s music was characterized by its catchy pop melodies, soaring vocals, and driving guitar riffs. The duo’s sound was heavily influenced by 1960s pop and rock music, as well as contemporary dance and electronic music.
Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle were both accomplished musicians in their own right before they formed Roxette. Fredriksson had released several solo albums in Sweden, while Gessle was the lead singer of the popular Swedish band Gyllene Tider.
Despite the duo’s success, Roxette faced several challenges throughout their career. In 2002, Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent extensive treatment. She made a full recovery and returned to performing with Gessle in 2009.
Roxette continued to record and tour until Fredriksson’s death in 2019. She passed away after a long battle with cancer.
