Lauren Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske) was an American actress and model who rose to fame in the 1940s. She was born on September 16, 1924, in New York City, USA 1. Bacall’s parents were Jewish immigrants or their descendants. Her father left the family when she was young, and she later changed her last name to Bacal, adding an “l”.
She had a long and successful career in films, television shows, and plays, and was one of the leading ladies of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Bacall was known for her alluring, sultry presence and her distinctive, husky voice. She made her film debut at the age of 20 as the leading lady opposite her future husband Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not (1944)
Bacall died on August 12, 2014, at the age of 89 from a stroke.
