Kirk Douglas – Artist of The Month March 2023

Kirk Douglas (December 9, 1916 – February 5, 2020) was an iconic American actor, film producer and director with a long, influential career that spanned over six decades. His relentless dedication to his career and passionate performances have cemented his place in the annals of film history. Kirk Douglas has gone down in history as a Hollywood giant and role model, not only for his stellar career achievements and influence, but also for his charitable works and advocacy for humanitarian causes.

Kirk Douglas was born as Issur Danielovitch Demsky in 1916 in Amsterdam, New York. His family was of Jewish heritage and his father owned a horse-drawn carriage company. While young and facing poverty, he worked multiple jobs, such as caddying for golfers, delivering extra newspapers, and working on a beach of Lake Saratoga. He ultimately attended St. Lawrence University, where he was encouraged and nurtured by his faculty mentor, Jack Dawn.

In 1940, he moved to Los Angeles with his best friend, where he worked a series of odd jobs. He gained his Screen Actors Guild card under the name Kirk Douglas and got bit parts in films and shows, including a small role in the 1942 Academy Award-winning movie, Lawrence of Arabia. He was eventually cast as the lead in his first starring movie, The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers, which became a box office success, propelling him to stardom.

Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, he starred in some of the most iconic films of all-time, such as Paths Of Glory, Spartacus, and Adventures Of Captain Fabian. He was widely heralded as one of the greatest leading men of his age, performing in a total of 90+ films in his entire career and earning himself two Academy Award nominations in his lifetime. In addition to his acting career, Kirk Douglas also wrote and produced a number of films and started his own production company, Bryna Productions, for which he directed and produced multiple films.

In addition to his successful acting career, Kirk Douglas is renowned for his advocacy of humanitarian causes. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, he became an outspoken advocate for diverse causes, ranging from Soviet-American relations to social justice. In 1996, he was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace, a role which he devoted much of his time and energy to for the rest of his life.

In 1997, Kirk Douglas received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his life’s work, and in 2009, he was given a special Oscar at the 81st Academy Awards. His youthful, zestful spirit, driven personality, and legendary career will never be forgotten. Kirk Douglas passed away in 2020 at the age of 103, leaving behind a vast legacy of influence and an unforgettable impact on the film industry.
