Brass door handle from the Sahara Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, one of only five in private hands.
The Sahara Hotel and Casino is a closed hotel casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It was in operation for 59 years from 1952 to 2011. The hotel had 1,720 guestrooms and suites with a casino covering more than 85,000 sq ft (7,900 m), and sits on 55 acres (22 ha) including the empty adjoining land. The hotel is the northernmost stop for the Las Vegas Monorail. The Sahara was the last remaining vintage “Rat Pack” casino-hotel, and anchored the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip. The porte-cochere entrance, topped by an onion-domeminaret, is designed to set the resort’s warm Moroccan flavor and hospitality for arriving guests.
The Sahara is owned by SBE Entertainment and Stockbridge Real Estate, who plan to reopen it after a $744 million renovation as SLS Las Vegas, part of SBE’s chain of SLS hotels. The door handle measures 10″ X 6 1/2″ and is solid brass with multi coloured glass inserts (complete) and door fixings to the reverse.
The handle was obtained at the National Content Liquidators Sale at the Sahara Hotel and Casino which was bittersweet—part voyeuristic garage sale, part retro encounter group. From its founding in 1952 to its closing in 2011, the Sahara—its improbable onion-dome minarets cheerfully bobbing beneath the aqua sky—promised not only Moorish lanterns and tasseled leather poufs, but the wholesale cultural displacement that came to be synonymous with the city itself.
