Venus de Mars, born in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1962, is a transgender punk-glam rock artist and the lead singer of All The Pretty Horses, a band she formed in 1994 in Minneapolis. Emerging from the 1980s Minneapolis punk scene, Venus de Mars adopted her stage name in 1992 after publicly coming out as transgender, a courageous act that positioned her as a trailblazer for gender nonconformity in rock music. All The Pretty Horses, known for their provocative lyrics and theatrical live performances, blended punk’s raw energy with glam rock’s flair, releasing albums like Glamourpuss (1996), Horsesex (2001), and Creature (2002). The band’s core lineup in the early 2000s included Venus de Mars (lead vocals, guitar), Jendeen Forberg (drums), Eden Taylor (bass), with Shannon Blowtorch and Emily Hooper (Star) contributing as dancers and backup vocalists, adding to the group’s dynamic stage presence. Their music gained a cult following, particularly after the 2008 documentary Venus of Mars, directed by Emily Goldberg, which chronicled Venus’ life, music, and marriage to Lynette Reini-Grandell.
In 2017, Venus de Mars received the Minnesota Music Award for Best Glam Rock Artist, recognizing her impact on the genre. She continues to perform and advocate for transgender rights, solidifying her legacy as a pioneer in both music and activism.
