About Grease
“Grease” is a 1978 American musical romantic comedy directed by Randal Kleiser and based on the stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.
It stars John Travolta as greaser Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John as Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson, alongside Stockard Channing as Rizzo, Jeff Conaway as Kenickie, Didi Conn as Frenchy and Dinah Manoff as Marty.
The film was produced by Allan Carr and Robert Stigwood and follows the on-off romance between Danny and Sandy amid the friendships and rivalries of students at Rydell High in the late 1950s.
Although set around a fictional American high school and a beach in Australia, it was largely filmed on location in and around Los Angeles, including Venice High School for Rydell’s exteriors, Huntington Park High School for interior and dance scenes, Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu for the opening beach sequence, and the Los Angeles River basin for the Thunder Road car race
