About David Houston and David (1969)
Released in 1969 by Epic Records, David is a gospel-focused studio album that showcases Houston’s deep-rooted faith and vocal purity. Known for his chart-topping country hits like “Almost Persuaded” and “With One Exception,” Houston also had a strong affinity for sacred music. This album reflects that devotion, offering a collection of traditional hymns and spiritual standards arranged with Nashville polish.
The track list includes:
Side A
- “Old Time Religion” – a rousing opener with communal spirit
- “This Train” – a rhythmic gospel classic
- “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” – a soulful rendition of the spiritual standard
- “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” – a heartfelt tribute to eternal connection
- “Gonna Lay Down My Burdens” – a reflective hymn of surrender
Side B
- “The Milky White Way” – a smooth, uplifting gospel tune
- “Old Blind Barnabas” – a lesser-known spiritual with storytelling depth
- “Were You There” – a solemn and powerful meditation
- “When the Saints Go Marching In” – a jubilant closer with celebratory flair
- “Oh Happy Day” – a contemporary gospel hit reimagined with country warmth
The album blends traditional gospel, Southern spirituals, and Houston’s signature vocal clarity, offering listeners a reverent and emotionally rich experience. “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” and “Were You There” stand out for their emotional gravity, while “Oh Happy Day” and “The Milky White Way” showcase Houston’s ability to bridge classic hymns with modern arrangements.
Produced and arranged by Billy Sherrill, the album features clean stereo sound and studio musicianship typical of Epic’s late-60s gospel catalogue. The sleeve design includes liner notes and a portrait of Houston in contemplative pose. The blue ink autograph on the back cover adds a personal and historical layer to the presentation, transforming a devotional country album into a one-of-a-kind collector’s item.
