About Angharad Rees

Angharad Mary Rees, CBE (born 16 July 1944, Cardiff – died 21 July 2012, London) was a distinguished British actress best known for her role as Demelza in the BBC’s 1970s adaptation of Poldark. Her portrayal of the spirited Cornish heroine earned her national acclaim and remains one of the most iconic roles in British television history. Rees studied at the Sorbonne, the University of Madrid, and the Rose Bruford Drama College, before launching a career that spanned stage, screen, and film.

She starred in Hands of the Ripper (1971), a cult Hammer Horror film, and appeared in Under Milk Wood (1972) alongside Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Her stage credits include Shakespearean roles and West End productions such as The Millionairess and A Handful of Dust. Later in life, she founded a jewellery design company, Angharad, with pieces featured in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). Rees was awarded a CBE for services to drama and remains a beloved figure in British cultural history.
