Terence Wilson (Astro) – Artist of The Month December 2023

Terence Oswald Wilson, better known by his stage name Astro, was a British musician, rapper, and toaster, born on 24 June 1957He was a part of the reggae group UB40 from 1979 until he left the group in November 2013. His nickname, Astro, comes from his childhood when he wore a pair of Dr. Martens boots with the model name “Astronaut”.

Astro was a founding member of UB40, a band formed in December 1978 in Birmingham, EnglandThe band achieved considerable international success, with more than 50 singles in the UK Singles ChartThey were nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times and were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group in 1984UB40 has sold more than 70 million records worldwide.

Astro’s contributions to UB40 were significant. He sang lead vocals on the hit “Rat In Mi Kitchen” which reached number 12 in 1987The group also enjoyed success around the world, including in the US, where “Red Red Wine” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You” went to number one.

Astro left UB40 in 2013 and went on to perform with the breakaway group UB40 featuring Ali Campbell and AstroSadly, Astro passed away after a short illness on 6 November 2021, at the age of 64. His music and contributions to the reggae genre continue to be celebrated and remembered.
