Suzanne Nadine Vega is an American singer and songwriter best known for her folk-inspired music. Vega’s music career spans almost 40 years. It came to the fore in the mid-1980s, when she released four singles that reached the Top 40 in the UK. These included “Marlene on the Wall”, “Left of Center”, “Luka” and No Cheap Thrill. Originally released as a cappella on Vega’s second album, Solitude Standing, “Tom’s Diner” was remixed in 1990 as a dance track by the English electronic duo DNA. The original acapella version of the song was used when creating the MP3 format. The role of her song in the development of MP3 compression led Vega to win the title “Mother of MP3”.
