An Irish tenor – known as “Mr Blackpool” – (died at the age of 79) in 2008. Phil Kelly had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease and an infection on his spine. His widow Jean and friend of more than 40 years Frank Carson paid tribute to “Big Phil”.
During the 1950s the 6ft 2in curly-haired entertainer became a huge hit in the resort and beyond. His work saw him tour all over the world, including Australia and America. Phil was born in Northumberland, but grew up in Ireland before moving to Blackpool when he was about 20.
His talent was discovered by Blackpool favorite Josef Locke, who overheard him singing for his companions as they queued outside the Grand Theatre. Phil, of Lytham Road, South Shore, turned professional in 1952 after Frank Randle gave him a spot in Randal’s Scandals on Central Pier. As well as singing, he added comedy and playing the violin to his performances.
