It has been well documented that at 4:00 am on August 16 1977 Elvis wakes up first cousin Billy Smith and his wife, Jo, to request they play a game of racquetball with him. Presley plays the game while barely moving, and playfully attempts to hit Billy with the ball. In doing so, Elvis manages to hit himself with his racquet, bruising his leg. The game is called off. He then moves to the piano in the racquetball court to sing two un-identified gospel songs and “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain,” before retiring to bed at 5:00am

Elvis was introduced to racquetball in 1968 by his then-physician Dr. Frederick Nichopolos.  The doc coached his son Dean and a few other beginners, then moved his practice to Memphis in the mid 60’s and coached Dean in his partnership with young Marty Hogan (who would become the sport’s Babe Ruth and all-time highest money-winner).  When “Dr. Nick” began treating Elvis for saddle pain from his motorcycle riding, this blossomed into a lifelong friendship during thousands of racquetball games.

In 1975, Elvis built a 2,100 square foot, two-story structure at Graceland to accommodate his new interest for the sport of racquetball. The racquetball building is a large, two-story rectangular building (2,200 square feet). The interior included a lounge area and racquetball court on the first floor and upstairs, Elvis’ private dressing room, Jacuzzi spa, and facilities for guests. Today, the racquetball court serves as an additional exhibit area for Elvis’ many awards, as well as his stage costumes. The court’s entire north and east walls are covered in gold and platinum records presented to the Elvis Presley Estate in August 1992 by RCA executives and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the largest single presentation of gold and platinum awards ever made.
