ELVIS PRESLEY – handwritten note from Elvis Presley signed EP which reads “”Mrs Odom, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year E.P””. This dates from 1955 and was signed by Elvis following a visit to Mrs Odom’s Soda Garden in Prichard, Alabama after she invited him there for a free meal.

Comes with a photocopied undated, unsigned letter of providence from Mrs Odom’s granddaughter which reads:

“Back in 1955 Elvis was going to sing at The Greater Gulf State Fair in Pritchard Alabama (1). My Grandmother and Mother went to that show. After the show my Grandmother met Elvis and told him she liked the way he sang and that she owned a restaurant in Pritchard called “Odom’s Soda Garden” and he if was back in town to come by and she would give him a free meal. Then she asked him if he had a picture that he could sign for her and she said “I think you are going to famous one day.” This was October the 26th 1955 and Elvis was 20 years old.

The next year, 1956, Elvis went to Vigor High School in Mobile, Alabama (2) and he was kicked out for shaking his hips (3). So he went to my Grandmothers Soda Garden. But my Grandmother was not their (sic) but her workers knew to give him the free meal. So after he ate, he left her a note that said “Mrs Odom Merry Christmas and Happy New Year EP””

(1): The Greater Gulf State Fair is a 10 day agricultural fair held each fall in Mobile, Al. (not Pritchard, Al.) On October 26, 1955, Elvis, Scotty and Bill were part of the entertainment at the first Greater Gulf State Fair. They performed two shows, one at 3:30 and one at 7:30

(2):  Vigor High School, at 913 North Wilson Avenue in Prichard, Al. (not Mobile, Al.) At 10 a.m., on October 21, 1955, while in the area  to perform at the Greater Gulf States Fair, Elvis, Scotty and Bill were booked to perform at Vigor.

(3): Margaret (Williams) Burcham, then a ninth grader at Vigor, was in attendance at the performance.  She recalls, “I remember the auditorium was full-we loved assembly programs because we got out of class! We had over 330 in my graduating class so I know the auditorium held many more than that. If I’m not mistaken the usual cost for a program was 10 cents-could have been 25 cents but I’m thinking a dime.”  The performance though was cut short when Elvis reputedly told an “off-color” joke.  According to Margaret, “there was a social studies teacher, Mr. Ed White, who was a bi-vocational minister.  He was offended by the swivel hips and the cute little joke that Elvis told.  Elvis joked, ‘what happened to the farmer who was milking the cow that jumped over the moon? He was left holding the bag.’ We roared but it was the last straw for Mr. White.  They said he went to the office and insisted that the principal stop the show.”
