Description

A set of four A5 black and white cards, depicting Elvis Presley in 1956. Card one has been signed by Alfred Wertheimer in black ink. All cards have the “All Rights Reserved, Copyright Alfred Wertheimer” on the reverse. Alfred Wertheimer copyrighted images sell for $100s when available at auction and one image in this set has been hand signed by Alfred Wertheimer, a rare find indeed.

Providence: bought in June 2014 with all proceeds going to Presley Place,  a 12-unit, rent-free Memphis, Tenn., apartment building for homeless people trying to get back on their feet, funded by the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation.

In early 1956, an RCA publicist asked legendary photographer Alfred Wertheimerto shoot a 21-year-old up-and-coming singer in Memphis named Elvis. “Elvis who?” Wertheimer stared blankly — but he took the assignment. How bewildered he would have been to know that the young man before his camera, to whom he was given unlimited access and of whom he’d take nearly 3,000 photos that year, would go on to become a legend, a heartbreaker, a catalyst for a new kind of consumer culture, a king of pop culture — the King.
