Elkie Brooks (born Elaine Bookbinder, 25 February 1945) is an English singer, a vocalist with the bands Dada and Vinegar Joe, and later a solo artist. She gained her biggest success in the late 1970s and 1980s and has been nominated twice for Brit Awards.
She is known for her powerful husky voice and hit singles such as “Pearl’s a Singer”, “Lilac Wine”, “Don’t Cry Out Loud”, “Fool (If You Think It’s Over)”, and “No More the Fool”, and top-selling album Pearls. She is generally referred to as the “British Queen of Blues”.
By April 2012, Brooks had released more albums that had reached the top 75 of the UK album chart than any other British female artist, although this has since been equaled by Kate Bush.
The sequel to the popular Pearls album, A&M decided to play it safe by keeping Gus Dudgeon as producer. Another set of songs, old and new, helped to maintain Brooks’ popularity. The album remained in the charts for 25 weeks, where it joined its predecessor which was still riding high. Pearls II was later released on CD in 1993. Three hit singles and a busy tour schedule maintained a high profile allowing Brooks a two-year gap before the release of her next album, Minutes.
Originally, the album had a more rock-orientated feel and included a stunning long version of Free’s “Be My Friend” with a one-take vocal. However, the label was concerned that this harder direction would alienate Brooks’ fans and hurriedly recorded “Loving Arms” as a replacement.
