Diane Ernestine Earle Ross (born March 26, 1944) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Ross rose to fame as the lead singer of the vocal group The Supremes, which, during the 1960s, became Motown’s most successful act, and is to this day the United States’ most successful vocal group, as well as one of the world’s best-selling girl groups of all time.
Ross’ success as lead singer of The Supremes made it possible for future African-American R&B and soul acts to find mainstream success. The group released a record-setting twelve number-one hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, including “Where Did Our Love Go”, “Baby Love”, “Come See About Me”, “Stop! In the Name of Love”, “You Can’t Hurry Love”, “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”, “Love Child”, and “Someday We’ll Be Together”.
Eaten Alive was released in 1985. Primarily written and produced by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, the album also includes a contribution from Michael Jackson who co-wrote and performed on the title track. It includes her international hit single “Chain Reaction”, which topped the charts in the UK and Australia. The album reached #45 in the US, #11 in the UK and Australia and the top ten in Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands.
The album was released on the RCA label in the US where it was deemed a commercial failure, selling less than 300,000 US copies. It fared better internationally as an EMI label release to which Ross had been signed directly since 1981 (though Ross’s relationship with EMI dates back to the beginning of her international career since they distributed Motown releases).
