Robert Davidson is a British photographer, best known for the iconic counter culture image of Frank Zappa sitting on a toilet in a London hotel room in 1967, fondly known as Zappa Krappa.
In the summer of 1967, nineteen year old Robert Davidson was commissioned to shoot Frank Zappa in his London hotel room to promote an upcoming concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Zappa let him in upon arrival and proceeded to use the toilet, Robert seized the opportunity and immediately asked through the ajar door if he could take his picture on the throne – Zappa obliged.
This set of images, commonly known as the ‘Zappa Krappa’ pictures almost immediately gained cult status, a sentiment echoed by Zappa himself in 1983, when stating, “I’m probably more famous for sitting on the toilet than for anything else.”

Born in Dundee, Davidson left school at seventeen years old to live in Paris, where he met, and was influenced by the Time Life photographer Emil Cadoo.

Two years later Davidson returned to London and began to work in fashion photography, taking the first test shots of Twiggy. At this time also, Davidson became acquainted with Tony Secunda, manager of The Moody Blues, Procol Harum and the Move. He was subsequently appointed as Secunda’s official photographer, shooting The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Arthur Brown to name but a few.
