John Lennon was voted the eighth of “100 Greatest Britons”.

Born on October 9th 1940, John Lennon was a famed English singer and songwriter. He was an international sensation from being a co-founder of the band The Beatles with Paul McCartney. The Beatles were the most commercially successful and influential band in the history of popular music. The Beatles impacted the popular music scene like no other before, or since.  After the split, Lennon continued his fame as a solo artist and social activist.

After his marriage to Cynthia Powell in August 1962, with whom he had 1 son together, John Lennon remarried the following year, on March 20, 1969, to Japanese avant-garde artist Yoko Ono.

The Beatles became the first British band to break out big in the United States in 1964 and named a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II of England.

John’s solo album, 1971’s Imagine, peaked at No. 3 on Rolling Stone magazine’s “All-Time Best Songs” list. Double Fantasy, his best-selling solo album with three million shipments in the US won him the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He was awarded the BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music the following year.
